Origin of the Zodiac

147 maanden geleden

Have you ever wondered where your star sign comes from?

Firstly, the Zodiac simply refers to a narrow band in the sky of 12 constellations. These constellations are of course, the 12 star signs.

"Zodiac" comes from Greek meaning "circle of animals," and according to Greek mythology the animals representing the stars were launched into the night sky to commemorate their brave acts....

Aries: Hermes sent a winged golden ram to lead Phrixus and Helle away from their evil stepmother.

Taurus: Zeus was in love with Europa, a beautiful princess. Zeus took the form of a magnificent white bull so he could mingle with the rest of the herd. Of course, Europa spotted this beautiful white bull!

Gemini:
Representing twins Castor and Pollux, they were protectors of all sea men. For this reason they were ummortalised as constellations.

Cancer: A crab nipped Hercules' foot whilst he was fighting a snake. Hercules crushed the crab but Hera picked it up and launched it amongst the stars in the skies.

Leo: Hercules fought a lion in the forest, and Zeus placed this lion in the sky for everyone to see.

Virgo: Representing the goddess Astraea who was associated with inocence and purity. She saw how flawed the earth was, that she escaped to the heavens.

Libra: The scales of justice - Libra represents the eternal virtues of goddess Themis.

Scorpio: The great Orion was stung and killed by a scorpion, all due to Apollo's jealousy for Orion's greatness.

Sagittarius: An intelligent centurion, loved by many including Hercules. This archer was the tutor to many heroes.

Capricorn: The God Pan disguised himself as a goat in order to escape a giant!

Aquarius: Known to be the water bearer of Zeus. Now he resides on the heavens as a cup bearer to the gods.

Pisces: Venus and Cupid morphed into fishes to escape Typhon the giant.
