Essential Guide to Ramadan

For those of you who don't know, Ramadan is an event which falls in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, usually lasting 29/30 days. This is a holy time for Muslims, and is regarded as a time of reflection, spiritual growth, prayer and fasting. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and so is extra important!
For those of you who do know about Ramadan, and are fasting during this period, here is your essential guide to Ramadan!!

When you break your fast.....
1. Avoid sugary foods, and fried foods - these release
2. Eat foods high in fibre such as wheat, oats, beans, lentils etc.
3. Try to include foods from each category for a balanced meal ie fruit, vegetables, protein (meat/chicken/fish), nuts, carbohydrates etc
4. Drink water as much as possible between iftar and bedtime, to accustom your body to fluids.
5. Replace coffee or other caffeine with herbal teas or caffeine-free drinks.
6. Ensure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals (ie calcium, magnesium and potassium). You can do this by eating fruits such as bananas, dates etc or even take a supplement.
7. If you can take a 15-20 minute nap during the day.
8. Finally, on the subject of sleeping, make sure you do get enough sleep, and stick to your own sleep cycle!

Don't forget to be consistent, not to neglect your studies/work, and also review yourself at the end of each day! Keep happy and healthy, I hope you have a wonderful Ramadan!
