What’s With All the Male Alter-Egos?

Beyoncé was the first pop-star to adopt an alter-ego, and who doesn’t want to follow in Bey’s footsteps? When I am…Sasha Fierce came out three years ago she released a statement saying, “I have someone else that takes over when it’s time for me to work and when I’m on stage, this alter ego that I’ve created that kind of protects me and who I really am.” Fierce brought the world “Single Ladies,” and “Irreplaceable,” so no one really cared whether they were watching Beyoncé or Sasha, especially since the qualities attributed to the latter—”fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken and more glamorous”—applied to Beyoncé, too. But now, other stars are giving birth to very different, very male alter-egos.  Lady Gaga has Jo Calderone. Her male dopplegänger first popped up in a fashion editorial and then opened last night’s VMAs with a performance of her latest single “Yoü and I.” Then, after Nicki Minaj won a Moon Man for Best Hip Hop Video she ran backstage and said, “The new album is going to have a lot of Roman on it,” she said. Roman? “He’s a boy who lives inside of me. He’s a lunatic. And he’s gay.” You’ve actually met him before, he sort of sang “Roman’s Revenge” on Nicki’s debut album, Pink Friday, apparently just a taste of what’s to come. So who do you think is next? Will fall bring Taylor Swift’s gun-slinging, tobacco-chewing alter-ego or Kanye’s tutu-wearing inner ballerina?
