October 4th to 10th was declared World Space Week by the United Nations General Assembly on the 6th of December 1999. Last year, the celebration focused on an astonishing accomplishment that has lead to 50 years of ever more daring space exploration: the first manned flight in outer space (Yuri Gagarin, 12th of April 1961). This year’s theme is “Space for Human Safety and Security” and it is aimed at uncovering and highlighting the contribution that various space instruments (such as satellites) make toward a safer and more sustainable environment for human life on Earth.

Curious? Join the celebration and find out what’s happening in your town!

So then, what about space and fashion? How do they go together?

Fashion designers have been inspired by space ever since the beginning of the "space race" in the early 1960s. In their space-inspired collections, elements such as metallic materials, helmets, clothes which resemble uniforms or mimic imagined extraterrestrial life are very common.

In 1968, Jane Fonda starred in the movie Barbarella, where she played a heroine sent to save Earth from evil. This was one of the very first space movies whose influences are still recognized on the catwalks of the 21st century.

But it is definitely not the only one that has served as inspiration for fashion; designer Christopher Kane admitted that his lavish Spring/Summer 2009 collection was influenced by the famous sci-fi movie Planet of the Apes.

In the same season, Spring/Summer 2009, Karl Lagerfeld prepared for the Fendi collection playing with shades of white, silver and grey. On the catwalk, models wore futuristic high-heels and their hair was styled to look as if they had just went through a fight with space monsters!

The design house of Alexander McQueen is - no doubt - the master of space inspired fashion, mainly because of their recent collections and, in particular, the Spring/Summer 2010 collection. From the make up worn by the models and the hairstyles to the totally crazy and unwearable armadillo shoes, every part of the runway show gave the impression of beings from another planet. It is then not a surprise that we get to see  eccentric singer Lady Gaga, for example, famous for her "alien style", choosing Alexander McQueen outfits so often.
