Here at ELLEgirl, our sense of fashion is inspired by everything from coolest street style to the most coveted runway looks. Today our senses have been provoked by one of Emma Stone’s many 2011 flicks, The Help. The movie’s based on the best-selling novel by Kathryn Stockett (her first, actually) set in the tumultuous 1960s. It follows the life of Skeeter (Stone), a sizzling Southerner and recent college grad, who’s bound and determined to become a writer. In hopes of accomplishing her goal, Skeeter decides to interview the black women who have spent all their lives tending to upper class white families. Let’s just say she causes quite a ruckus in her little Mississippi town. The story of The Help is enough to invigorate and provoke viewers (and readers) with its controversial topics. Not only is the storyline stirring, but like we said, we can’t help but notice that fashion!

OK, so there are multiple ways in which a girl like yourself can get this style. The most obvious (and cheapest) way is to start raiding the closets nearest you. That’s right: grandma, mom, aunt June, anybody really! You’ll be looking for structured pieces, nothing like the wispy designs from the ’70s. Nope, the early ’60s was a time to be rigid and proper, following First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Think tapered clothes: skinny jeans, capri pants, and close-fitting waists. Grab dresses with big floral prints—those are certainly fashionable today. And we can’t forget pastels! As far as jewelry, women in the 60′s were more concerned with large prints and fun colors and generally used a simple necklace and pair of earrings as their only accessories. Just in case grandma and mom threw out their 50-year-old clothes, have no fear. Plenty of stores have ’60s silhouettes, so it’s easy to recreate the look. (We really love ModCloth’s selection of fabulous frocks!)
