She was Queen of Egypt from the tender age of 17 and spent most of her short life attempting to keep Egypt free from Roman domination. Her beguiling ways and intelligence (she spoke nine languages) were her major weapons in this struggle –and for many years they worked their magic. Among those whom she charmed were the Roman generals Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony, but she was finally defeated by Anthony's rival Octavian and died, so history tells us, by the self-inflicted bite of a poisonous snake called an asp.
