Relationships and Politics
* Disclaimer: This post will trigger someone.*
Hey everyone!
If you're an American like me, you have just seen who will be the President for the next 4 years. I'm writing this post on November 4th, the day after the election. Elections are exciting and frustrating times, oftentimes with feelings being dragged behind us in the dirt as our loved ones, friends, and enemies bicker about themselves.
My whole childhood I was raised believing in one of the extremes of politics. I thought I was right no matter what, and never imagined that I would willingly end up with someone on the opposite side of the argument. Now, I'm in a relationship with my significant other who disagrees with me on most government matters. That doesn't really bother me at all, because I love him for him, and generally speaking we both try to remain more moderate when together.
Regardless of the fact that I'm confident in my relationship and our vastly different opinions, the people around me haven't always seen eye to eye with me. I've been questioned by several people in my family, certain friends, and even a collegue.
What I'm trying to get at here is this; Why should it matter if someone and their significant other have different political parties or views? I was watching the local news the other day and I saw a story about a couple who had voted for opposing candidates for 30 years. The news station was focussing on the fact that this couple had "managed to stay united" even with polar opposite political beliefs. My first thought upon seeing that was, "Ok, so what?"
We live in a time period where politics are so polarized, and every election there's serious talk of "civil wars" or "assassination attempts." How is that logical? Why should we allow politics to cause us to react in such an absurd way? Why should we allow political boundaries define who we can and cannot be with?
So long as you have no moral opposition to your relationship, then go with your heart, and love whoever you'd like to love. Yes, it's good to have things in common in a relationship, however there are more than just politics to have in common.
