Pop Princess

Britney Spears is the ultimate pop princess and pop culture icon. Her outfits continue to influence many, from crop tops and cargo pants inspired by her stage outfits during the 90s, to air hostess and school girl outfits inspired by her iconic music videos. Looking back on my past blog posts, the last time I paid tribute to Britney was back in 2016! With her Birthday this month, I felt that this was perfect timing to style some more inspired outfits.

For my first outfits, I had to start with her first music video, Baby One More Time. Kicking off her pop career twenty years ago, the music video was set in a high-school, and saw Britney wearing a schoolgirl outfit - grey cardigan, classic shirt tied up, pleated mini skirt, socks, and chunky platforms, not to forget the hair worn in pigtails with fluffy hairbands. We also see her wearing classic gym outfits, one of which I have recreated above, with the pink sports bra, bright white pants, and sneakers.

Moving on to my next outfits, I was inspired by her performance of Slave 4 U at the 2001 VMAs, and also an outfit worn in the music video. The performance went down in VMA history, with Britney performing with a snake over her shoulders. For the outfit, I went for a pair of denim hotpants, chain belt, and gold bra, and a pair of Timbaland inspired heels. As Britney wore body jewels with the outfit, I decided to go for a body chain for the sparkly element. For the music video inspired outfit, I paired the pink crop top with the pink pants worn over a pair of leather pants. Again, I went for a body chain to add some sparkle to the outfit.

For my next outfits, I wanted to recreate two that she wore during performances with Madonna. The first being the outfit she wore during the now-infamous 2003 VMA performance with Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Missy Elliott. The performance has a wedding theme, with Britney appearing on stage with a veil, bouquet of flowers and wedding dress, but also referenced Madonna's 1984 VMA outfit with the layered necklaces and 'boy toy' belt. The next outfit was inspired by Britney's outfit in the Me Against The Music video. Contrasting the femininity of the first outfit, this was a take on a classic male outfit, with the blazer, pants, and suspenders paired with a corset layered over a white tank top, heels and a vinyl collar and tie.

With my final outfits, I went for more of Britney's casual outfits. The first outfit was inspired by a 2001 photoshoot with Andrew Eccles, and is a great example of a classic 2000s look with the DIY cropped shirt, denim mini skirt (Britney's was low-rise with tie-up details), strappy sandals and gold accessories. You could swap the skirt for a pair of low-rise jeans! My last outfit was inspired by Britney's performance at the 2003 NFL Kickoff event. This is a go-to performance outfit, with the super cropped top, low-rise pants (baggy cargo pants would work too) and heeled boots. During this performance, Britney ripped off the pants to reveal a pair of black and white hotpants to match the crop-top!

Thank you for reading! What's your favorite Britney song and music video?
