Book Review: The Book Thief
Hi Dollies!
I was a huge bookworm when I was young, and I still love my books today. I thought it would be nice to share this passion with the you all by starting a new series of book reviews here. I'll refrain from spoilers, don't worry.
The Book Thief (2005) by Markus Zusak is a brilliant novel in my opinion. It's very well written and rich with symbolism. I first read this book a few years ago when it was just gaining momentum after its movie release.
A brief description of the novel from Goodreads: "Trying to make sense of the horrors of World War II, Death relates the story of Liesel--a young German girl whose book-stealing and story-telling talents help sustain her family and the Jewish man they are hiding, as well as their neighbors."
The size of the book can be a little intimidating for less-confident readers, but this is one of those books where once you fall into the story's unique rhythm, you just can't put it down. This book is one of my favorites because of the clever choice of narration and the way it's integrated into the story. I especially love the authenticity of the characters and dialogue.
One of the only things I dislike about the book is the abrupt ending. Certainly, it was tear-jerking and fitting for the scenario, but when I'm so emotionally invested in some characters, I wished Zusak could have pulled the ending out a bit longer. Other than that, this book is definitely a must-read.
What should I review next?
Take care,
♡ Joanne
