Cruelty-Free Makeup
Hello, dolls!
Makeup is a wonderful thing. However, when purchasing any makeup, an important question needs to be raised. Thank you to minihel for suggesting that this subject be raised on the Starblog.
At what expense is this makeup coming at?
If you're not aware, to make sure makeup does not irritate the skin or hurt it in any way, many companies test the products out on animals - not only possibly subjecting them to painful experiences, but treating them in completely inhumame ways in captivity. Many cosmetic brands don't use animal testing, and this makeup is known as 'cruelty free'. However, many more do use animal testing in their processes.
The Humane Society International estimates that 100,000 to 200,000 animals suffer and die every year, just so consumers can have the perfect lipstick shade. These include, but are not limited to, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice. Dogs and monkeys are also used in chemical testing, but not makeup testing.
It's important to know what brands are cruelty-free and which aren't. Some brands such as Kat Von D, Too Faced, NARS and many more are cruelty free, However, some of the most popular brands do test on animals. These include Estee Lauder, Bath and Body Works, Covergirl, L'Oreal, MAC, Maybelline, and many, many more. Besides educating yourself on the brands that use animal testing, there are other steps you can take. Educate others, boycott certain brands or even write to companies that use these practices to voice your opinions.
Getting your perfect foundation or blush shouldn't come at the expense of the pain, suffering and the life of an innocent animal, so remember that next time you go beauty shopping, there are some brands that are better than others!
