Buns Go Sleek For Summer

The ballerina bun:  It may be an extension of this year’s ladylike trend or a continuation of ‘The Black Swan Effect,’ either way its shaping up to be this summer’s chignon of choice. We’re just half way through June and already it’s been spotted atop the heads of Chloë Sevigny, Emily DiDonato, Kirsten Dunst and Kate Bosworth (and of course, a possessed Portman).

Each year when the weather turns hot, it seems even those most devoted to wearing their hair down search for a new way to tie up their tresses to sweat just a little bit less and this summer, at least in New York, the style’s seamlessly taken over the messy topknot’s top spot. Its poster girl isn’t a grungy goddess like Erin Wasson but rather a more polished breed whose softness speaks to a certain degree of quirky sensibility and historical knowledge. Even better it’s completely non-descript (unlike say, Heidi braids), able to take you from brunch on Bedford Ave to shopping trips on Madison—in other words, depending on what you wear below the neck it can be both certifiably hipster and buttoned-up. To get the look we recommend using John Freida’s new flyaway-taming mascara wand for streamlined styles.  If, however, you’re aiming for just a bit of texture, use your fingers to pull Bumble & Bumble’s surf spray through your hair before fastening with bobby pins.  Either way, you’ll be ready to pirouette down the steaming hot sidewalk!
