Review: Life as we know it

166個月之前

A bog-standard chick flick is what I expected with “Life As We Know It,” but I was more than pleasantly surprised. The film manages to combine laughter, tears and the harsh, yet loving reality of raising a child. The gorgeous Messer (Josh Duhamel) has an appealing transformation from being a hot, arrogant fool to being hot, real and genuine. Holly (Katherine Heigl) is in the lucky reason for his change and together with baby Sophie, creates a family that’s at once unconventional, but charming. The film depicts well the highs and lows that raising a total and completely unexpected baby can bring into one’s life. Despite the predictability of the happy ever after story, it’s a great film to whip out on a ladies night... even with some of the boys.

“Life As We Know It” was equally easy going and funny as it was high on the Richter scale of emotions. Baby Sophie is adorable, Messer is just plain delicious and Katherine is real. Not to mention the hilarious cab driver/babysitter (watch the DVD...). Holly and Messer quickly rise to the challenge of raising the baby, but I like that it’s not all ice cream and cakes. Messer is given the ability to speak the truth, which often is thought but never said.

For those of you who do watch the film on DVD, notice how often the baby is picked up: no wonder she hardly ever walks-- she’s never given the chance! Finally when she is, however, Messer and Holly’s reaction is quite endearing, and funny when Messer knocks her right back down.

Overall, it’s a great fun-for-all kind of film, but be warned that if you have younger siblings who like to scream and cry, you might want to fast forward through those bits!
