Fashion Week got a touch of cool LA girl style last night at Mister H at Mondrian SoHo. Guests watched “What’s Up,” a short film by Gia Coppola that includes clothes from Wren and jewels from Fallon. Tennessee Thomas DJ’ed, while Miranda July and Sofia Coppola popped up to support their friends (and relatives!). “The way Gia can romanticize girl characters, it’s a really natural fit,” said Wren’s Melissa Coker. “I love how it’s this dynamic portrayal of a day in California, and the quality of light.” Bella Zarember, the star, spends a languid day at home in LA. trying on clothes and playing with jewelry against a backdrop of class schedules and The Strokes stickers before heading outside for a walk. She forgets to put on shoes (or doesn’t care?), but it doesn’t stop her from stomping on a hermit crab on the sidewalk. “We shot during the Carmaggdon weekend, when the 405 was closed, so I tried to incorporate the idea of not being able to go out and being trapped inside. I remember in high school, not being able to drive, and imagined what you do at that age,” explained Coppola. “You can’t drive, you look on Facebook…There was this cute kid, Cortez, who was going to be the annoying younger brother, but it got too long,” she said. As for what’s next, Coppola’s gearing up to work with America’s favorite renaissance man: “James Franco wrote Palo Alto stories, so I’m going to direct that. I’m excited!”

‘And Then There Was Us,’ Victoria Barlett’s spring collection, wasn’t exactly light. The designer was, “inspired by going back and looking at evolution, Darwinism, invertebrates, etcetera,” she told us backstage, post-show. Bartlett presented spring as two miniature collections, one representing the sea, and the other land, each half working to express, “the idea of shelling,” with inverted darts, soft boning, and jutting panniers. Oceanic muses like jellyfish were represented with undulating cowls, fluid skirts, and flashes of bright neoprene. She described them as, “fluo green and pink. Pink’s not my color, it’s very feminine, but I love them together—it’s kind of sporty like a ying & yang.” Meanwhile the brand’s signature swimwear and lingerie was accompanied by matching resin jewelry designed in collaboration with Orly Genger. Part two took note from beetles and used gold and grey fabric’s to emphasize the architectural elements including wing-like extensions and decorative fluting. Together, the two presented a strong case for intellectual weekend dressing with a strong story—though no backbone!—behind it.

A Look from DVF, Matteo Volta/Imaxtree
It wasn’t just the American flags Diane Von Furstenberg handed out post-show that gave her spring collection an Americana vibe. The designer sent a parade of bee-hived models down the runway, marching to a cheerful soundtrack in white frocks, pastel florals and over-sized Marimekko-like prints in mostly unstructured, cocoon shapes. Eventually, there were metallic jacquard cocktail dresses and enough sequins to satisfy everyone’s inner party girl. Speaking of party girls, Nicky Hilton sat front row amidst a bevy of industry titans including Oscar de la Renta, Valentino Garavani and Rachel Zoe. Hilton, perhaps still in a daze from the “five or so” parties she hit the night before, wasn’t looking forward to any new trends in particular but did say, “I love that it’s just such a wearable brand and I really love the accessories.” We’ll second that—especially the robin’s egg blue clutch at left.

- It seems like every celebrity either creates their own perfume or starts their own fashion line and Vanessa Hudgens is no exception! Vanessa is already in the process of creating a collection that showcases her own fabulous style! "We're still figuring it out, but it's definitely in the works," Vanessa recently revealed, she even went on to describe what the collection would feature, "street chic, bohemian and wearable." Sounds great to us!
V certainly has a interesting style and we think it would be great if she put her creativity to cloth! We can't wait! (eonline)

Though Prabal Gurung, Nicki Minaj and florals have gotten their fair share of attention at New York fashion week thus far, the will he or won’t he rumors surrounding Marc Jacobs and Dior are leading the gossip pack. Neither LVMH or Marc Jacobs have commented on the rumors, which started about a month ago, but that hasn’t stopped WWD from spilling more details on the alleged negotiations. A source tells them that talks have turned tough—though not so tough that anyone’s giving up—as Jacobs and his partner, Robert Duffy, ask for $10 million. With couture collections added on top of ready-to-wear, as well as his own collections, Dior would prove substantially more work than Louis Vuitton and require more time in Paris for both Duffy and Jacobs—which means less time with the Marc Jacobs empire in New York. The fashion crowd may be obsessed with the move, and what it’d mean for the rest of LVMH’s brand, but investors are pretty nonchalant. One banks’ head of consumer brands said, “In this day and age, for a brand the size of Louis Vuitton or Christian Dior, we tend to believe that artistic directors only account for a small portion of the brand’s attribute. We therefore do not immediately factor in a change in artistic director into our valuation of the brand.”

There was no shortage of rock’n’roll references at the Y-3 spring ’12 show: The electrifying soundtrack, the Kurt Cobain-inspired plaid (one pair of pants fused together sweats with red checked fabric, making it look like the model had just pulled the ultimate ‘90s grunge move and tied her shirt around her waist), and yes, even massive arm tattoos. The front row reflected as much, with music progeny (Peaches Geldof) and hitmakers (Omarion) seated besides the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Pitt.
Also there was David Macklovitch, aka Dave 1 of Chromeo. As half of one of the catchiest electro-funk duos around, we had to ask: What’s his ultimate Fashion Week playlist? “I would put ‘Body Work’ by the Dream, ‘The Bay’ by Metronomy, and ‘Big Bad Wolf’ by Ducksauce. I think those three are cool,” said Macklovitch. He went on to add, “All three are fierce, to use an adjective that I will never use outside of Fashion Week; I go through the whole year never using the word fierce, but for this one week of the year I’ll describe these songs as fierce.”

When the lights went down inside the Plaza Hotel’s ballroom last night for Thakoon‘s spring summer show the soundtrack said “Old Western” while the curated smell was more suited to an Indian spice market. The vibrant collection followed suit, starting with cowboy hats and yoked western shirts before morphing into sari-inspired dresses saturated in bright colors and flecked with gold. So how did the designer get from one point to the next? “I started with the whole cowboy thing,” Thakoon said, backstage after his show, “the idea of romantic America, this notion that’s sort of lost really, not America anymore but this coolness of cowboys, this free spirit. Then, when we were doing print research—looking at bandannas and paisleys—that kind of led us to India.” Like fall’s winning collection, which also merged two disparate cultures—the Masai and Versailles—it worked. The pink hair and colorful cowboy hats made for a fun runway experience but it’s the little dresses we expect to see everywhere come spring. “I always feel like I do red carpet in a way that’s not red carpet,” Thakoon said when asked about the collection’s Hollywood-potential. “It’s like our evening stuff is usually with flats.” Maybe that’s why we like it so much? As for exactly which fashion forward starlet he’d love to see don a spring frock first, he was speechless: “My brain is fried.”
