This is the first season in a few years that Isaac Mizrahi’s taken his show outside the tents, and he turned it into a dog show called “Cake.” The designer, who’s no stranger to entertainment, presented a collection for fall that looks like a cooler girl’s—albeit hoity toity—version of last spring’s garden party. Given that sweet theme, colors were frothy hues of sweet mint, lavender and other pastels, plus pops of hot pink and orange. Flirty blues, greys and soft feminine florals toned things down while bows (though not obnoxious ones) and draping adorned both mini-dresses and floor-grazing gowns. The pieces are simple, but not in a bad way; even the dresses textured in lace, sparkle and pearly embellishment seem easy to wear.

Of course, it’s hard to closely examine a purple dress when there’s a poodle of the same color walking alongside it (101 Dalmations déjà vu), or a frightened furry friend in the nook of another model’s arm. As if their presence wasn’t enough, the models also wore poofy headpieces à la poodle and Mizrahi sent three-tiered cakes on platters down the runway. One front-row onlooker certainly enjoyed the show: as the models started coming out, Johnny Weir kept laughing and saying, “I like the hair,” as he was donning a similar style himself. Even weirder than sharing the same hairstyle was when the second model came by closely matching the color of the light blue fur he had on. Coincidence?

This sibling rivalry is about to get heated. Elle Fanning, younger sister of Dakota, seems to be everywhere these days.  With a successful film career of her own (and 12-years old, no less), she stars in Sofia Coppola’s highly-acclaimed Somewhere and can be spotted off the big screen in The Curve of Forgotten Things for Rodarte’s spring 2011 collection.Elle is also coming into her own as a red carpet style icon. In a recent interview with Nowness, she cited her affinity for vintage fashion: “The 1950′s will always be my all-time favorite, but at the moment I’m adding in baby doll dresses from the ’60s and high-waisted shorts and pants from the ’70s.” Despite some very grown-up choices of Marchesa, Valentino Couture, and Marc Jacobs, this ingénue doesn’t forget the importance of a little youth and imagination: “When you lose believing in magic, you’re too grown-up and take yourself too seriously. Peter Pan had a point!” Here are some of her stand-out looks:

With their first EP, Love Your Ground, unleashed just four years ago, Mumford and Sons has already shared a stage with the likes of Bob Dylan, Dr. Dre, Mick Jagger, and Lady Gaga at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards earlier this year. Consisting of Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, “Country” Winston Marshal, and Ted Dwane, this hybrid of bluegrass, folk, and rock birthed from the West London Folk scene in 2007 have a rustic sound stocked with vocal harmonies and a banjo flourish. Yes, we love our boy bands to be brawny, but there’s nothing better than a good bookworm. Beyond instrumental finesse and (as described by his Facebook fans) “a voice that can break the heart of a robot,” Marcus Mumford has got brains, too. Many lyrics of the Mumford and Sons are wracked with literary references, to Shakespeare and Steinbeck. This bibliophile even runs an online book club from the Mumford and Sons website.

Girls love Justin for his crooning tunes, boyish charm, and that famous hair. But we haven’t seen him take a stand on any serious  issues until now, when contributing editor of the Rolling Stones Vanessa Grigoriadis decided to ask the big questions. Sure, the boy’s a cutie, but what does he think of health care? “You guys are evil,” he says with a laugh. He means Americans. “Canada’s the best country in the world. We go to the doctor and we don’t need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you’re broke because of medical bills. My bodyguard’s baby was premature, and now he has to pay for it. In Canada, if your baby’s premature, he stays in the hospital as long as he needs to, and then you go home.” Abortion? “I really don’t believe in abortion, it’s like killing a baby.” What if it’s pregnancy as a result of rape? “Um. Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.” What political party is he affiliated with? “I’m not sure about the parties, but whatever they have in Korea, that’s bad.” Pre-marital sex? “I don’t think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them, I think you should just wait for the person you’re…in love with.”

True, he’s a celebrity so his political views aren’t his top priority and as a teenager he has plenty of time to change his mind, but it is interesting to see what he thinks. And even if I personally don’t share a lot of his views, you have to hand it to the kid. Standing by your beliefs when being questioned by Rolling Stones magazine is no minor feat.

The braids at Y-3 fall 2011 were amazing. Frizz and ponytail lumps were allowed for a slept-in-my-braids look, blending tough chick and girl next door together. Who said multiple personalities isn’t chic? Check out Tresemme.com to learn how to recreate the braids (and other hairstyles) from the NYFW runway shows.

Models at the Vena Cava were full of sparkle—glitter sparkle, that is. This beauty trend is a perfect grunge look mixed with a little glitz and glam. Bellasugar.com reports that MAC makeup artist Christian McCulloch is this trend’s mastermind. The look was created with art store glitter, MAC glitter, and matte glitter. Will you be trying this new fall 2011 trend?

Wear: Yigal Azrouel dress, blazer, and heels

Vanessa Hudgens was looking super-chic as always at Yigal Azrouel’s show today, proving that while black is always appropriate, it never has to be boring. We love how she keeps her minimal look interesting with the different textures of the taffeta dress paired with that perfect leather sleeved blazer, all by Yigal. So what does the designer think of this clothes horse? “She’s easy, has great energy and is really easy to talk to,” says Yigal. Looks like you’ll have an invite for next season too, Vanessa!

A New York Fashion Week runway sees its share of odd, twisted and downright bizarre trends. But for fall 2011, are masks becoming the new headbands? Both bejeweled and lace, these unusual accessories were spotted at Erickson Beamon, Farah Angsana, and Jason Wu. It remains to be seen whether this is just a styling coincidence, or if we’ll all be pulling a Phantom of the Opera in a few months.

It seems that financial predictions for the second quarter aren’t looking too good for our Kate Spade pocketbooks. A shortage of cotton, a rise in the cost of labor and manufacturing, an export ban in India, and a fast growing clothing retail market in Asia and India are causing the price of cotton to rise up to 10% more this spring. Designers in the past had merely turned to synthetics as a low-cost alternative when cotton prices rose, but now with the high demand for synthetic fibers and cost of rubber and oil, prices will increase up to 50%. So that means, those $70 cotton jeans? Now $77. That $50 polyester top? Now $75.

So what’s a fashionable girl to do? Because let’s be honest, being on a budget is no excuse for not looking fabulous. Throw a clothing swap. Have everyone bring clothing in good condition that they no longer want or wear, make some popcorn, turn on some music, and let the borrowing begin! That top that makes your face look pasty could look absolutely fantastic on your friend. Even if you are all different sizes, you can still swap accessories and jewelry to add something new to your look. Check out your local thrift store. You can find some real gems at the Salvation Army or your local consignment store if you live in a small town, some even sell clothing by the pound. But if you live in a big city you know how picked over thrift can be, so check out Ebay or Smashion. And don’t forget, you can also sell your own clothes online to make a little extra shopping money!

Make a list. If you are one of those girls that every time she drops by the mall picks up a little $5 hand lotion, a few $3 bangles, and a $10 tee, put a stop to it right now! All of those little purchases can add up. Instead, clean out your closet and get to know what you really need this season. Are you missing a pair of basic black pumps? Need a new maxi-skirt to update your look? Is your favorite denim jacket on it’s last legs? Write it down, and only buy what’s on your list. Get to know your tailor. It’s amazing what a tailor can do. Do you have any clothing that you would love if it just wasn’t too small, too big, too long….? Take it to your tailor and for a few bucks you can have a bunch of new clothes that are perfectly for you. Go independent.

My personal favorite, consider buying from an independent designer as opposed to fast fashion brands such as Forever 21 or H&M. Not only will you be getting a unique piece, but because they don’t have the same over-head as mass market brands they are cheaper. A few great sites are Etsy, Moxsie, and Indie Designer Labels.
