Winter Festivals Part 3

il y a 148 mois

Hanukkah: It is a Jewish festival consisting of eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kisle0v according to the Hebrew Calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December. It is celebrated with the lighting of candles from a unique candelabra - the nine-branched Menorah or Hanukkahas it is also know. One candle is lit every night on the Menorah until the eighth night. You might think that sounds odd because there are 9 lights and only 8 nights, well, the 9th light is placed either above or below the rest on the candelabra and is used as a normal candle to give off light as use of the other 8 candles is forbidden if it is not the right time for it to be lit. In modern culture it has been shown in the television show F.R.I.E.N.D.S when the character Ross dresses up as an armadillo to tell his son the story of Hanukkah - the armadillo has no real significance to the story of Hanukkah, Ross just wore it to make the story seem more exciting for his son because he seemed more interested in Santa Claus and getting his presents which is quite a funny little story but i also thought it was a good way of getting the story of Hanukka spread around the world raising awareness of festivals in winter other than Christmas.
