Style Tribes - Grunge

il y a 84 mois

90's fashion has been a recurring source of style inspiration in recent years, and is continuously being reinvented season after season. One of the more popular styles within the 90's that keeps reappearing is grunge. For this Style Tribes post I have focused on the subculture, looking at its origins and how it influences style today.

Primarily a music genre, grunge gained popularity during the mid-90s, although it first emerged in the 80s. The overall aesthetic to the clothing was carefree and unkempt, and generally anti-fashion, shunning the high-fashion style that was on trend at the time. The clothing was usually thrifted, worn out and slouchy, with a muted color palette. Staple items include oversized sweaters, flannel shirts, doc martens, long skirts, Birkenstocks and band t-shirts.

While the general grunge style was drab and mundane, Courtney Love brought a glamourous edge to the style. A typical outfit would include a silk baby doll or slip dress, but keeping the grunge element with a worn-out jacket or cardigan, ripped tights and biker boots. Other staples include a tiara, Mary janes, knee-high socks and smeared make-up. This look was also a big influence on Hedi Slimane's Spring 2016 Saint Laurent collection.

With my final outfits, I was inspired by recent collections that were influenced by grunge. Plaid is a go-to print for this look, and was seen on the Plastic Tokyo and Fenty x Puma catwalk, with an updated, brighter color palette. However, I was more inspired by Coach 1941 Spring 2017, which showed a Courtney Love influence, with contrasting pieces such as sheer dresses and metallic embellishments mixed with chunky boots and oversized jackets.
