Making and Keeping Friends

il y a 105 mois

Making friends is something I've struggled to do my whole life. I'm autistic, I'm an introvert and quite frankly I'm just not good with people. Over time, I have gotten better and I've managed to find myself people who I really enjoy the company of, and it's one of the best feelings. I know a lot of you struggle making friends in school or other situations, so I wanted to share my advice as it may help you out!

1. Find things in common with people and talk about them
I met my best friend in French class because we were both really struggling - somehow we bonded over our mutual failiure, it's totally possible!

2. Clubs and organisations
If you're gifted and talented there are tons of clubs you could join where you might find people just like yourself. If you don't know about your interests yet, you could try joining a youth club or another less specific organisation.

3. Use social media to your advantage
Although it's not ideal have an exclusively online friendhip, keeping in touch and making conversation over social media with the friends you have can be really helpful, especially if you're busy people!

4. Plan events!
When you have an aquaintance, the best way to initiate a friendship is to plan doing something. Go out for coffee, see a movie - whatever you decide to do will bring you closer, and show them that you can make time for them.

5. Just generally be a good person
Being trustworthy, reliable and encourage them to be their best self - that's all anyone can ask for in a friend!
