Winter Festivals Part 1

147 kuukautta sitten

At the minute it is October and winter is about to come very soon (summer if you live in the southern hemisphere) which means that some of the biggest festivals are about to begin very soon. The main festivals lots of people tend to think of during winter are things like Christmas and Thanksgiving but there are many more that lots of people have never heard of so i’m going to give a brief little list & description of a few of the festivals during winter!

Christmas: Well, for many people i think this is the biggest one, whether you are actually Christian and celebrate it because of the story of the birth of Christ, or whether to you it is just a celebration of love, giving and good will to all men with no religious connections it is still a widely celebrated festival. It is celebrated on the 25th of December, leading up to it traditionally is 4 weeks of advent (a time of preparation for Christmas - Advent calendars originate from this 4 weeks of advent but are usually for a shorter period of time starting from the 1st of December and is now used commercially either to sell products or to get people in the Christmas spirit!), Christmas Eve, celebrated on the 24th of December (which speaks for it’s self - the evening & night before Christmas) this is usually celebrated simply because of the anticipation people are feeling for Christmas but is said to have originated from teachings that Jesus was born during the night. Then on the 25th there is Christmas Day, where many people indulge in Christmas feasts and dinners, wear their nicest clothes and give and receive gifts from family and close friends. Then their are the twelve days of Christmas stretching over the 25th of Dec - 6th of January which have largely died out over time. So, whether you believe in Jesus or simply celebrate it due to commercialism, Christmas day is a day celebrated by many in both the Western and Eastern part of the world for one reason or another!
