Words are Powerful
Yes, words are powerful. Some of you may know I’m nearing the finish line of high school, and recently I’ve been reflecting on my past year. The things that seem have the biggest impact on my life usually have some association with words: books that I’ve read, feedback I’ve received, quotes I’ve loved.
If you don’t believe me, think of how powerful literature is, how memorable speeches are, even significant events have some connection to words or have words written about them. For example, I’m sure most people know what “One small step for man…” is associated with. Those words are significant, inspirational, and powerful.
In our day-to-day life, we usually do our best to fill those around us with positive messages, if not out of the pure goodness of our hearts, then because our society appreciates positive words. Articles and advertisements do this for marketing, we praise our peers, co-workers and sometimes even strangers.
So why, then, do we talk to ourselves with such negativity?
For me, self-deprecating humor is commonplace on my media outlets and jokes with my friends. It’s easy to point at a trash can and say “me,” earn a laugh, and move on, but I’ve recently read an article that though some instances can be good, generally, this constant negative self-talk eventually leaves a bigger impact on our own self esteem. Furthermore, when I’ve had a setback, I lose hope and start telling myself I’m not good enough.
I’m sure many of you can also relate. In such an artificial world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we’re not good enough. I highly encourage you to reflect on the way you talk to yourself and stay aware of how those thoughts alter our perceptions of ourselves.
Take care,
♡ Joanne
