Declare War on Procrastination!
Attention students of the world! Whether you're in high school, college or the next chapter in your life, we are all faced with one common enemy: procrastination!
September 6 was observed as Fight Procrastination Day, an unofficial and fun holiday that compelled me to write about an important issue that effects most people.
Procrastination is the act of postponing and delaying tasks. Depending on the scenario, it could be seen as passive-aggresive behavior, or it could mean that you are a perfectionist. In my case, I've sruggled with attention deficit, and mood swings which in turns leads me to delaying tasks and putting off things I need to do. Even the most fun things became very difficult for me to complete or tackle. It doesn't mean I am lazy, I just just very hard to focus on something for too long if it requires a lot of energy.
Mental health and procrastination are definitely linked. Studies and research and many people ask themselves how to defeat this common enemy. The urge to procrastinate is not something that can be defeated. If you have defeated the urge, you deserve a medal. Please do share your accomplishment with the rest of (ha-ha) So, if you want to make sure you avoid procrastination this semester and new chapter in your life be sure to try this "REAP" strategy, to reap real results!Switch the the pro in procrastination to proactivity! Plan ahead and make an event of whatever tasks seem like a big chore to you. Find a place that will help you focus and get it done. Just DO it! Hint: the library or quiet coffee shop is the best place, NOT your room. The faster you get to doing something the better. When you are assigned something, do it the same day it's assigned.
Early bird gets the worm: Nothing helps me more than going to sleep early, and getting up really early. Squeezing as many tasks in after I wake up, helps me start off the day right. Do everything in your life EARLY. Be the first to do something, not the last. Preparing for everthing early, studying early, getting started on assignments on a syllabus early and basically pretty much anything done months, or weeks in advance will always help you avoid the urge to procrastinate.
Rest, Recharge, Repeat: This is the most important part! It is very straightforward, simply remember you cannot properly function without enough sleep, a proper caloric intake of nutrients and protein, and making a productive routine for yourself is an essential element of enforcing healthy habits that help you avoid procrastinating. Reflect on why it matters you to accomplish your goals if you have too. Please share below your own procrastination struggles and tips. Tell us about your time management skills and advice or simply share the funniest or worst thing that has happened to you due to procrastination. Remember: Get out there and do one thing today that will help you avoid this habit.
