TLC Tribute

hace 104 meses

Monday (April 25th) marks 14 years since we sadly lost Lisa 'Left-Eye' Lopes. For those that don't know, Lisa was a rapper, and one third of iconic 90's girl group TLC. To pay tribute, I thought I would share some tips on how to achieve their style.

TLC's style was just as important as their music. What I loved about them was how they turned against what the likes of Lil Kim and Foxy Brown would wear (super skimpy and ultra-glam outfits), and instead chose what the male hip-hop artists we wearing, although they would then wear something feminine like a bralette underneath. Missy Elliott, Da Brat and Aaliyah also sported similar looks (Rihanna and Ciara would later channel this style).

“Everything we said and did and dressed was true to our hearts.” - T-Boz & Chilli speaking to Rookie Mag, 2002.

Their style was also a mix between street (What About Your Friends and Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg music vids for reference) and cyber wear (No Scrubs). For the street style, choose pieces such as baggy overalls, ripped denim, timberlands and docs, slouchy t-shirts and sport jerseys, but also crop-tops and sport bras. The best colours to choose are definitely primary colours (Red, Blue, Yellow), but with additions of green, orange and purple. With the cyber style, baggy pants, chunky boots ('gothic' ones work best), strappy crop tops, leather chokers and PVC pieces are perfect. I would then stick to a colour palette of black and white, but metallics such as silver compliment it well.

RIP Lisa 'Left-Eye' Lopes, May 27, 1971 – April 25, 2002.
