Diwali - the festival of lights (Part 2)

So now you know a little a bout this wonderful five-day festival (check my previous post), how exactly do we celebrate Diwali and what are the customs?

Firstly, it is a time for prayer. Normally each household would have a prayer session in the evening for Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and success. During Diwali, we also visit the temple to make offerings.

Next, it's time to wear new clothes and exchange gifts. Sweets and dried fruit are the main choice.

Furthermore, many households will have a spring clean. So out with the old, and in with the new!

Also, to commemorate the return of Rama, the houses, courtyards, and gardens are lit with decorated lights as well as diyas. If you can't get hold of any diyas, you can use any fairy lights!

Traditionally, spectacular firework displays are held to celebrate Diwali. It will be worth checking your area to see if there will be any firework displays held.

Dolls, whether you are going to dedicate a small diya to Lakshmi, clean out *that* cupboard, or help prepare a festive meal,I hope you enjoy getting ready for the festival of lights!
