Mixing of the senses!

Have you ever wondered how any “sound” would “taste” like? What if one could “taste” something by just “smelling” it?

A few people in the world possess an astonishing & extremely rare neurological condition called as Synesthesia. In this phenomenon; a stimulus targeted for one sensory modality can trigger response in another modality simultaneously! For example, a Synesthete could see splashes of coloured light or have a certain taste if he/she hears a sound. The cause of this condition is believed to be “cross-wiring” in the brain. While for most of the people, the neuronal connections get “refined” with time; for Synesthetes the neurons from one sensory region remain “crossed” with the other, for their entire lives.

Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe had a sound-colour Synesthesia. In one of her biographies, the author mentions that she used to see vibrating patterns on hearing sounds!

The world is full of miraculous things indeed!
