Mile-high heels will always have a loyal following. But thanks to the ever-evolving runway, flats are becoming freshly three-dimensional—and a major spring 2011 trend. Gone are the days of frumpy, dull flats as fashion houses including Lanvin, Chloé, and Giambattista Valli showed an array of surprisingly comfortable options.

    A Flair for Fetherston

Erin Fetherston’s upcoming line, appropriately named Erin, promises authentic Fetherston style without the budget-breaking price to match. The designer is no stranger to affordable fashion—having collaborated with Target and Juicy Couture in the past—so already she boasts a wide range of fashion followers who love her style. Many designers team up with other companies to put out cheap-and-chic lines which grows their fan base, but once the collaboration is over, those newfound fans are left with no way to pay for the designers’ runway looks. Fetherston addresses this issue by designing a line that is within her brand and within your budget. Items range in price from $73 to $250. There haven’t been any hints as to what the line will look like just yet, but keep your eyes peeled for the line’s debut, slated for this coming fall.

Anne Hathaway is looking cozy and sleek in all black with contrasting accessories as she heads out to dinner with boyfriend Adam Shulman in Santa Monica. We love the pop of color her purple scarf adds to her monochrome ensemble, and the accessory is as practical as it is fashionable. Plus, the pair of cream ballet flats by Roger Vivier are a refreshing change from your usual winter black, and the nude color is a great way to add inches to your legs. Try these pieces to get a similar style:

Unexpected stripes are popping up in unexpected places for spring 2011. Made chic made Coco Chanel nearly a century ago and worn since by fashion royalty like Brigitte Bardot, the Breton fisherman look has officially been reincarnated. With more options than ever, there’s no reason not to get on board for this wearable trend. Prada and Sonia Rykiel turned out mega-watt stripes in bright, showstopping colors, while Jil Sander and Haider Ackermann played off a more demure seaside theme, updating classic navy and white in modern silhouettes. Some designers, like Céline and Jason Wu, stuck with the motif’s casual, laid-back origin. But Issey Miyake, Clements Ribeiro, and others dressed their stripes up with light fabrics, mixed prints and serious heels. Then, of course, there’s always that timeless Saint James or agnès b. t-shirt waiting in the back of your closet.

MTV has decided not to air her latest reality TV show, which would focus on her new clothing line Paper Crown. Apparently inspired by the documentary The September Issue, this show would focus mainly on her career and clothing line as opposed to her personal life. But, it seems that MTV thought that the show was lacking in the drama department. Lauren Conrad commented on the network’s decision, “MTV felt the subject matter was too high brow for their audience and offered me the opportunity to change the show by incorporating more of my personal life…we delivered the show that we sold and are sorry MTV didn’t feel their viewers were savvy enough to appreciate it.” Are you disappointed that MTV killed the show? Would you have watched it? Sound off in the comments!

    The New Freshman 15

These days, the typical weight gain of yore is the least of a college freshman’s problems. The New York Times published a chilling article about a recent survey of stress levels in American first-years- and the results weren’t pretty.Students’ emotional health levels have plummeted to an all-time low since the study first began 25 years ago, falling from 64% ranking themselves as above average (1985) to 52% (2010). Counselors confirmed the results of the survey with what they see in their office every day. More and more students are seeking treatment for depression and psychiatric problems, some of which begin even before the first day of class.

In addition to increasing academic pressures and competition, researchers cite possible negative influences as parents’ financial stress, college debt, and the ever-illusive  job search. The survey also notes the widening gap between men and women. Eighteen percent of the men polled consider themselves to be frequently overwhelmed, compared to a shocking 39% of their female counterparts. And although women appear to be more willing to deal openly with their stress, making up about 60% of counseling clients, they also seem to lack the coping abilities of men, who utilize exercise, sports and interaction with college faculty members to their benefit. Dr. Mark Reed, director of Dartmouth’s couseling service, states in reference to the results, “I don’t think students have an accurate sense of other people’s mental health. There’s a lot of pressure to put on a perfect face, and people often think they’re the only ones having trouble.”

Do you rank your emotional health as below average? Or when it’s crunch time, do you keep your anxiety under control? Either way, here are some tips to relax and detox from the pressure: Keep a realistic, sane to-do list. Don’t include more than is humanly possible. When you can’t finish it all (because you are human) you will only upset yourself. Take care of yourself. The guys in this study were onto something: physical and mental health are connected. So that yoga lesson or power nap might give you the push you need to finish your paper. Get a little help from your friends. Everything seems easier when you have your group to put it into perspective. So don’t let your social life die because you’re locked up in the library 24/7. Call in sick. When it’s really too much to handle, take a mental health day, afternoon, hour, and use the time to be blissfully unproductive. Veg in front of the TV, go shopping- whatever you feel at the moment. Ask for help. There’s zero shame in talking to someone about what you’re feeling. Reach out to a parent, friend or resource at your own university.

National organizations, like Girl’s and Boy’s Town and National Mental Health Services, offer confidential conversations and information.
