British designer and animal rights activist Stella McCartney chooses to use no leather in her clothing. She’s developed a line of 100% organic skin care products, made from naturally grown and produced ingredients. Also, she supports a number of charities, including cancer research, environmental protection and human rights programs.
Danish designer Peter Ingwersen, creator of the brooding fashion house Noir, makes social responsibility desirable in high fashion. Noir made a decision early on that they would purchase items from suppliers who recognized and support human rights and environmental protection, and have agreed to the terms of the UN Global Compact.
Californians Stewart+Brown not only use organic and sustainable fabrics, but give back a percentage of their sales to non-profits and non-governmental environmental and social welfare programs.
Ali Hewson, along with her husband, some guy named Bono, from a little band you may have heard of called U2, uses fashion to build trade with Africa and supports local communities and social development. Their company, Edun, also uses its profits to help train and support African communities to learn to grow sustainable farming businesses.
