Being A Volunteer Fire Fighter

70 måneder siden

A couple of months ago, I decided to become a volunteer firefighter! This wasn't something that just popped up, I had wanted to be one for ages. Here's my story about "station life."

My Father has been a firefighter for 18.5 years. When I was 2 weeks old, I was brought to the same fire station I work at now. Since that day, I have basically grown up at the so-called station. The fire station isn't just a place where we go when the siren goes off. It's a place of friendship, family, love and support! While growing up, I made some really close bonds with kids all ages and even the adults. I looked up to almost everyone there and aspired to one day be like them.

However, as a kid, you don't see the gruesome side of things. I remember back to when they would come back from a call, pale-faced, shocked and lost, turning directly to their partners and other for support, whispers in soft tones. They did this to keep the bad side of station life out of our lives. This I am thankful for, as if I had known what was going on, I think it would have put me off.

One of the things I cherish the most about being a firefighter is the fact that I can make a difference to the world. Not a huge one, but definitely a change. I get to help out my community and its a great feeling when you've done something good! One of my favorites things though is what happens behind the scenes. We are all kids at heart. Having water fights, indoor rugby, playing tag until someone injures themselves, nearly everything that happens there during down time is fun! We're all one big happy, supportive family that loves each other and our community!

Do you want to be a firefighter?
