Summer time means summer heat. We leave our homes with perfect make up all intact, and come night our blush is worn off our cheeks, our lipstick color has faded, and worst of all? Raccoon eyes from running mascara! Lucky for us, we have beauty experts concocting waterproof mascaras to beat the heat. After countless test runs, the ladies of ELLEgirl came across five waterproof mascaras that made a long-lasting impression on our lashes. See which ones got our vote after the jump!

The basic ingredients to mascara include oils, waxes, and pigmentation for those labeled, say, “jet black,” “indigo blue,” or “forest green.” Mascaras created to lengthen or curl eyelashes often contain nylon or rayon microfibers. Water-resistant mascaras contain substances that rebuff water, like dodecane. Which means the only makeup remover to wash off waterproof mascara (and waterproof lipstick) should be oil-based. Despite mixed reviews from users regarding its short rubber brush, Covergirl’s LashBlast Volume Waterproof mascara proved to triumph with great results. Not only was its Very Black vibrant and charcoal-dark from lash to lash, but it plumped our lashes almost twofold and lengthened our curls without the clump. This mascara kept its dark shade and volume even after a long day’s workout!

Best Lengthening Covergirl LashExact Waterproof, $7, Target The flexible bristles on Covergirl’s LashExact Waterproof mascara perfectly coats each lash while lengthening. It provides the right amount of mascara without the overpowering clump. The brush sits on a slight angle making application processes easier and reachable at the hard-to-reach corners of our lashes.

Urban Decay’s special Japanese formula—microcrystalline wax—combined with a semi-fuzzy skinny brush helps add weight to our lashes and lengthens it. We took its namesake title to the test and made a splash into a pool. After a dab here and there to remove the excess water from our faces, our lashes were as perfect as we left them.

This 3-in-1 mascara not only highlights our eye colors, but it’s also waterproof and helps lengthen our lashes while looking au natural. It gently separates our lashes and adds a not-so-dramatic length. The shimmer from the formula are light-reflecting metallics that help bring out our browns, blues, greens, and hazels. It isn’t the most ideal waterproof mascara as it does lose its shimmer after wetting our lashes, but the length is still intact and smudge-free.

Mary Kay’s fuzzy bristle and almond-shaped brush adds the perfect amount of mascara on our lashes and helps reach those stubborn ones hiding in the corner of our eyes. The black instantly coated our brown lashes in two strokes. The mascara enhances our lashes more so than it does volumizes or lengthens it—leaving our lashes naturally black for a femme fatale look.
