Love
With Valentines day rapidly approaching I wanted to discuss the topic of Love.
Love is a wonderful thing, many people would say it makes the world go round. Of course, the world really spins because it needs to conserve angular momentum but that doesn't stop love being important!
Just like people, love comes in many shapes and sizes. The Ancient Greek's categorized 6 types of love: Romantic and impulsive Love (Eros), Close Friendship Love (Philia), Playful Love (Ludus), Love over a long period of time (Pragma), Love for everyone (Agape) and self-love (Philautia)
Some of the types of love were ranked from most to least important. For example Eros, romantic and impulsive love, was considered less important than Philia, love between friends. That is because they believed that we choose our friends, whereas romantic partners are chosen on impulse. We could debate this now. I certainly don't believe in 'love at first sight' but again, that is entirely debatable.
One thing that the ancient Greeks did believe that still stands today is that love is ridiculously important in human satisfaction. Without love, our we wouldn't be here- we all need love.
