Jobs in Fashion: Model

hace 138 meses

Lots of people think that modelling is a very glamorous job, travelling all over the world and meeting lots of famous people, but it's actually a lot of hard work! You need to be ready to work very hard, listen to lots of different people and love having your picture taken!

Not everypne can be a model; you have to be very tall, usually at least five feet nine inches. Fashion models also tend to be very slim so they have to live a very healthy lifestyle. Most models are spotted by talent scouts but it can be more difficult to be spotted if you don't live in a big city, so you can send a photograph to an agency. Good agencies don't need fancy portfolios, just a couple of snaps should be enough for them to decide whether or not you will make it. It's a good idea to spend some time practising different expressions in front of a mirror if you really want to make it as a model - you might feel silly at first but all models do it!

Once they are with an agency, most models spend a lot of time interviewing for jobs, these interviews are called "go sees" and a hardworking model might do ten in a day! The model goes to meet with a photographer, designer or fashion editor and shows them her portfolio, then they decide whether or not she gets the job.

Modelling isn't like a normal nine-to-five office job. Models often work on night-time shoots and have to go wherever the job might be. Sometimes they might work every day for a month and the next month, not at all. Successful models get to meet loads of designers and travel a lot which would be fun but I think I would be too sad to be away from my friends and family so often. I think I'll stick to being a fashion designer!
